Two Things

Two Things

First thing:

I just got Google adsense setup here. My contract forbids me from asking you to click on the links, so don’t click on the links if you don’t want to. Just know, I’m a poor college student and clicking a link is easy : ).

Second thing:

You HAVE to check out Pandora. It’s part of the Music Genome project, which was created to analyze music. I know, I know, sounds boring so far doesn’t it.

Fear not, more is on the way.

Pandora was designed as to utilize the research done in the Music Genome Project. This is done by you entering your favorite song or artist into a text box, and Pandora creates a “Station” for you to listen to with music that you most like will like. I was skeptical at first, but I was prooved wrong. Since I started writing this post, I’ve listened to 4 songs and they’ve all been really good songs of which two I have never heard.

Check it out,

Things I’ve learned

Things I’ve learned

My last two days have been for lack of a better word, educational.

I know that I’ve been raving about how Hula is so awesome, and it truly is. A few days ago however, I found a new mail server called Zimbra. Zimbra is Seriously Awesome. It’s got a ton of AJAX built in. I can’t say how awesome it “looked”. Okay, enough on how great it is.

Zimbra looked good enough that I decided to install it on my personal server, which this blog runs on as well. When I actually installed it I went through the normal installation procedure, and started up the server. I saw how sweet the admin interface was, and then decided to post here how awesome it is.

I typed in my blogs address into firefox and to my dismay, it failed to load, with an apache tomcat error!! For those of you who know about Linux webservers, apache tomcat, is not a standard webserver for html files, it’s a server for Java Servlet Packages.

The installation of this package completely took control of my server, disabling mysql, and my webserver which runs apache2.

It took me a while to figure out what was wrong and fix it. That’s just one of those things that you just say to yourself, “I’ll never do that again”.

I also learned that it’s always a good idea to be prepared time wise when you’re 1. in an area that you’re not familiar with. 2. it’s dark 3. it’s raining. To put it into a short explanation, i had a fun time getting to class tonight.

Anyways, I need back to my classwork.

Great weekend so far

Great weekend so far

This weekend has been pretty productive for me.

So far I’ve done two things that have been daunting for me to complete in the past:

1. Install Nvidia Driver for linux
2. Get TwinView (dual monitor as one display) support working as well.

Now all that I have to do is find a way to let the cord for the second monitor stretch to my computer from my desk.

I have to get up at 8 tomorrow, so I need to get to bed.

New Toy

New Toy

So a few days ago my motherboard died, which stunk. Fortunately I have a laptop where I can do schoolwork, but that still doesn’t mean that I didn’t need to get a replacement motherboard.

So I went to Newegg.com and bought a decent Asus one.

I’m using Debian GNU/Linux as my primary operating system, and before installing the new motherboard I was Sure (just like in Windows) that I’d have to reinstall the operating system in order for it to load.

I was wrong. Debian detected almost all of the hardware changes, and applied the changes for the first login after the motherboard installation.

The only problem was that I don’t have serial device support…. I don’t think.

The thing is, I don’t have any sda* devices in /dev. If you know anything about Linux, you know that these are needed to mount flash drives, usb hard drives, and the like.

Oh well, I’ll go forum surfing, and hopefully find an answer.

Later,
Jon Howe
